The 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival ended about three weeks ago … and I’m still recovering from it. Like Cannes, it’s difficult to find a good balance between watching films, writing about them, and absorbing the culture from another country in just a few weeks.

Ever since Yeo Yann Yann won best supporting actress for her portrayal of a jealous mother in the film Ilo Ilo at the Asian Film Awards, AFA, I have been searching for the film in Hong Kong. I wanted to watch every film from the AFA to see what award-winning filmmaking and acting is about and how they are valued in the Asian cinema.

The 8th Annual Asian Film Awards (AFA) took place in Macau at the City of Dreams’ House of Dancing Waters Theater. Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmaster took home seven of the fourteen nominations, including Best Film, Best Actress (Zhang Ziyi), Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Costume, Best Composer, and Best Production Designer.

Asian Film Awards: THE GRANDMASTER And SNOWPIERCER Lead Nominations
