While "Fantastic Four" takes the crown for the ugliest blockbuster reboot flop of 2015, "Terminator: Genisys" comes in a close second. Paramount's attempt to revive the franchise, while also retconning the storyline we've known so far, was a muddled mess, a movie that was continually pulled between going in a new direction, and referencing every iconic moment in the series.

And just like that, the Terminator franchise may be finally, officially dead. For now.
Following poor box office, turgid reviews, and an audience response that amounted to little more than a shrug, Paramount has pulled the planned sequel to Terminator Genisys off its calendar. In its place is the upcoming Baywatch movie, which should allow you fully appreciate just how little faith the studio has in this once-mighty franchise. There is only one possible direction for this series to go next: a full-on remake in 2030 or so.

Skydance's latest Terminator sequel, Terminator: Genisys, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jingle All The Way) & Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones), didn't exactly set the domestic box office on fire this past summer, bringing in just over $89 million, but despite that, it still managed to make a pretty significant impression at the foreign box office with a collection of over $350 million, nearly four times as much as its domestic total.

It couldn't even crack $90 million at the domestic box office, it's the worst performing of all "The Terminator" sequels, and critics roasted it over the coals, and yet, Paramount has been mum about the the future of the series following "Terminator: Genisys." A sequel is still slated for May 19, 2017 and there's lots of time left for executives to make a decision either way about whether or not they'll press forward, but this latest news from overseas has to be somewhat heartening.

J.K. Simmons — along with Michael Keaton — recently parted ways with Kong: Skull Island, but he still has some other (potential) big franchise plans. Simmons was one of the best parts of the mostly not-great Terminator Genisys, fully committing to his role as a frazzled cop and genuinely appearing to have fun with the film, which really needed it. The actor has now revealed that he’s signed on for more Terminator sequels, guaranteeing that if there are more of these movies, we can at least look forward to his part in them.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California.
