According to Deadline Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is in talks to take over the Akira remake that Warner Bros has been threatening us with trying to get off of the ground for several years. Warner Bros purchased the rights to make a movie for seven figures but nothing has ever gotten beyond pre-production. The picture got close several times. Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Book of Eli scribe Gary Whitta wrote a script which originally had Ruairi Robinson aboard to direct.

Chance The Rapper Explained To Jordan Peele Exactly Why He Loved ‘Get Out’ So Much Getty Image Chance the Rapper’s meteoric rise has been on his terms. The Chicago rapper has made no qualms about his beliefs, whether it be as a Christian, or working independently without a label. In turn, it has made him one of the more sought after artists in the world, with three Grammy wins to his name and plenty of success. To counter that, Jordan Peele has his own hold on 2017, shifting the narrative from his work as a comedian who starred in the noted sketch comedy show Key & Peele, to a director who created one of the year’s best films with the horror film Get Out.

Akira Movie Targets Get Out Director Jordan Peele Following the massive success of Jordan Peele's directorial debut Get Out, Warner Bros. is courting him for the long-awaited Akira live-action movie.

Whether you choose to overlook the accusations of whitewashing levied against Paramount’s upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie is entirely up to you, but there are certainly some who are rooting for the film to open doors for other anime projects. Studios aren’t exactly hot-spots for innovative thinking; if Ghost in the Shell bombs next weekend, there will no-doubt be executives at Paramount who claim the only real lesson is that American audiences don’t like Anime.

Akira: Lights Out & Life Helmers Eyed to Direct For years now, Hollywood has been attempting to tap into one of the last great sources of media to adapt: anime and manga. Recent years have seen the trend finally kick in, as Ghost in the Shell and Death Note movies are on their way. Of course, both of these films have come with plenty of controversy attached, as white stars are often substituted for the traditionally Japanese characters.

Akira: Justin Lin Possibly Being Courted to Direct Hollywood doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to adapting anime/manga properties for the big screen, as evidenced by the underwhelming box office returns (and at best lukewarm, at worst hostile, critical reactions) for such live-action films as Dragonball: Evolution and Speed Racer, as well as the animated Astro Boy – all three of which hit theaters in the late 2000s, as it were.

New Writer For Live-Action Akira Daredevil's Marco Ramirez starting from scratchWay back in 2007, Warner Bros. announced development of a massive new live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's seminal manga Akira. Three years later it was shut down. Two years ago it was back on again. Then it was shut down again. And while we've heard nothing since, there's suddenly evidence this morning that the project is still chugging away at the studio.
