"Finding Mr. Right" has turned into a mega blockbuster in China. It's the top film there for the past three weeks. Last week (4/1 - 4/7), it took in another $23.4M, upping its total to a staggering $62.5M. The Tang Wei starring film is now the second highest grossing romance in China.

Chinese Box Office: "Finding Mr. Right" Nudges "Die Hard 5" Off Top Slot; "Ip Man: Final Fight" Disappoints

Finding Mr. Right
In last week's report, I was expecting "Ip Man: Final Fight" to do well enough to at least place second at last week's box office (3/18-3/24), but that didn't happen. It debuted at fifth place with just $1.17M, not even good enough to beat the three-week-old martial arts comedy "Princess and Seven Kung Fu Masters."

A Good Day to Die Hard
"A Good Day to Die Hard" and "Resident Evil: Retribution" debuted in China last week, and the results for the fifth entries of both franchises were solid. Both films have underperformed in the States: "Retribution" grossed $42.3M last fall, about $20M less than the previous installment; "Die Hard 5" will likely finish around $70M, about $60M less than its predecessor.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons
In my previous Chinese box office report, I wrote that Stephen Chow's "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" would get close, but not beat "Lost in Thailand" for the record of highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. Huayi Brothers, the company behind "Journey to the West," apparently agrees with me.

Identity Thief
It’s a generally-accepted expectation of new releases to reel in top numbers at the box office on their opening weekend—this week, that was not the case. This weekend, the top spot was occupied by a holdout from three weeks ago: Identity Thief, which pulled in $14 million, for a very respectable total of over $93.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

A Good Day to Die Hard
Despite the paltry reviews most of this last week’s releases received, they all made a somewhat respectable showing for themselves at the box office. First and foremost among the new releases is A Good Day to Die Hard, which grossed $25 million over the weekend, for a total of $33.2 million (as the film first opened in theaters on Valentine’s Day).

Holiday Box Office: 'Die Hard' limps to top spot with $38.7 mil; 'Save Haven' surprises with $34 mil

A Good Day to Die Hard
variety.com – Paced by underperforming "A Good Day to Die Hard," Presidents Day weekend box office was down 10% from last year and, ominously, couldn't even match 2009-11. However, there were a few bright spots, notably Relativity Media's "Safe Haven." Leading the charge, Fox's Bruce Willis starrer "A Good Day to Die Hard" grossed an estimated $33 million Thursday-Sunday.

A Good Day to Die Hard
We’ve a sizeable batch of new releases this week—and between an action film sequel, a dramatic romance, a mystical-young-adult-book-turned-movie, and a cutesy animated film, there’s something for everyone, provided you’re not too choosy about film quality.
