"X-Men: Days of Future Past:" Best-Ever "X-Men" Scores Best-Ever Box Office

A couple of days ago, Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” the sequel to “X-Men: First Class” that unites popular cast members from the entire franchise, scored a near perfect 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was thinking it can’t possibly stay that high by the time it opens today; my prediction was mid to high 80s. Well, looks like Singer’s film will stay in the 90s. The Tomatometer is currently 93% after 153 reviews.

At 93%, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is the best-reviewed “X-Men” film ever, surpassing the 87% score achieved by both “X-Men: First Class” and “X2: X-Men United.” Impressive. (It’s also better than the 89% from “Captain America: Winter Soldier’s,” another surprisingly well-reviewed superhero film released last month.) Casting award-winning actors like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, and Jennifer Lawrence helps.

The time-travel film opened last night at 10pm in about 3,000 theaters and brought back $8.1M, by far the best Thursday night haul of any “X-Men” film. Compared to other blockbusters released so far this year, it’s about a million less than both “Godzilla” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier” though.

Nonetheless, this is a great sign heading into the four day Memorial Day Weekend, when the $200M production is expected to attract over $120M in business.
