'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Adds Quicksilver, Scoops 'Avengers 2'

Evan Peters

Well, this is interesting. Weeks after Joss Whedon reportedly confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Avengers 2 would feature the Marvel mutant siblings Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has one-upped his competing franchise counterpart by announcing that Quicksilver will also be appearing in his movie -- which just happens to be arriving in theaters first.

As Movies.com notes, this news would seem to indicate that Marvel and 20th Century Fox are either about to start a character war or are secretly in league for a seriously cool inter-studio superhero mashup -- and while the former seems likelier than the latter, Singer's scoop doesn't necessarily preclude Whedon from using Quicksilver as he sees fit.

For one thing, portions of Days of Future Past take place in the past, while others -- at least in the comics, anyway -- occur in an alternate timeline, meaning the Quicksilver we see during Singer's film may not have anything to do with the one that appears in Avengers 2. Moreover, as Movies.com's report points out, Singer's move could "[introduce] the origin story for a pivotal new Avengers character, thereby making him an easier sell by the time Marvel's monster sequel comes to town."

Of course, that doesn't discount the possibility that angry phone calls are being exchanged between Fox and Marvel today (and even if they aren't, imagining them is more entertaining than Fox's Daredevil movie).

As Marvel continues to assert its dominance and command the fates of the characters it licensed away before it became a full-fledged studio, it'll be very interesting to see how the various companies involved operate in the gray area between franchise ownership.
