Will Smith-Less 'Independence Day 2' Gets Rewrite From Carter Blanchard

Independence Day

After Will Smith turned down Independence Day 2 back in February, Fox has to come to terms with moving forward with the sequel without its star, but move forward the studio will. Carter Blanchard has been hired to give the Will Smith-less Independence Day 2 script a rewrite.

Last we've heard, the sequel will take place 20 years after the events of the first movie where the alien invaders have returned, and it will take the combine efforts of the previous war's heroes and those of the new generation to save humanity from extinction.

Roland Emmerich will direct and co-produce the movie with Dean Devlin. Michael B. Jordon is reportedly circling the lead role.

When Emmerich and Devlin first wrote their draft of the screenplay for Independence Day 2, they wrote a version with Smith and another without him. James Vanderbilt continued their work on both versions of the script. No word on how much of a rewrite this will be.

As for why Smith is not coming back, Fox just simply couldn't afford to have him. The sequel is tentatively scheduled to drop in theaters on July 01, 2016.
