Why Will 'Transformers 4' Have New Robots? Because The Toys For The Old Ones Weren't Selling

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura hinted previously that except for Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, the rest of the robot cast are unlikely to return for Transformers 4. Now, we know the reason why.

Hasbro's CEO Brian Goldner said (via Bleedingcool) at the UBS Best of Americas 2012 Conference that while Transformers 3 did well at the box office, the toys weren't selling as well as they had hoped. It is because of this reason that the Transformers 4 will have a new group of robot characters.

And all this time, we thought the change was made for artistic reasons, but I guess in the back on our minds, we always knew that was the not case.

However, there's a sliver of hope that some of the old favorites may return, if in a different form.

Director Michael Bay said in an interview that the fourth film will include “some redesign of the robots and an entirely new cast,” so there's some hope in that statement.

Bay will work on Transformers 4 once he's done with action comedy Pain and Gain. The fourth Transformers is dated for June 29, 2014.
