What's Popping: 'Transformers 4', 'X-Men: First Class 2', 'Zorro Reborn'
After spending more than 6 years working on three Transformers movies, no one can fault Michael Bay for wanting to do something else for awhile. But when THE Steven Spielberg wants you to do something, you do it. You don't ask questions. So Michael Bay finds himself back on the saddle once again for Transformers 4. At this point, it is assumed that none of the old cast will return for the sequel. Transformers 4 will have continuity with the previous three movies and will be sort of a reboot at the same time. We'll have to see what this means later. The movie is scheduled to come out on June 29th, 2014.
Work for X-Men: First Class 2 is underway with Matthew Vaughn onboard to direct the sequel and Simon Kinberg writing the screenplay. According to Kinberg, the sequel will do some unexpected things like developing the Magneto character more. All this may change though since Kinberg said they're still in the planning stages.
Deadline reports that Arash Amel is writing the screenplay for the new I Am Legend movie for Warner Bros. and that Will Smith will not sign on until he sees the script. Since Will Smith presumably blew himself up in the 2007 movie, we all assumed that the new Legend movie will be a prequel, but Deadline says WB is not calling the new movie a prequel. Maybe there was a lead-lined refrigerator nearby he could have snuck himself into to survive the blast?
According to Variety, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal will don the mask of Zorro in Fox's Zorro reboot titled Zorro Reborn. The movie will be a "futuristic" take on the masked vigilante and it will not take place in California or Mexico. While Bernal is a versatile actor, he's not exactly a household name. Look for Fox to surround him with a more named cast.
Fast 6 and Fast 7 were supposed to shoot back-to-back to save money, but that may not be the case anymore. According to Dwayne Johnson, "weather issues" is forcing them to scrap that plan and just shoot Fast 6 first and "worry about Fast 7 a little later." The new movies are going to be filmed in the U.K. and Germany. Production is scheduled for May.
