What's Popping: 'Star Trek 3', 'Transformers 4', 'Gears of War', 'MIB 4', 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'

Star Trek

When J.J. Abrams was hired to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, it was uncertain if he would be able to direct Star Trek 3 as well. Now, it's becoming increasingly clear that he won't. Paramount wants Star Trek 3 out in 2016 for the franchise's 50th anniversary, but that schedule will conflict with Abrams' work on Episode VII. Unless Abrams can perform miracles, there's no way he can work on both movies at the same time.

Kelsey Grammer has joined the cast of Transformers 4 and will play counter-intelligence operative Harold Attinger in the movie. We don't know how his character will fit into the plot, but what is known is that he'll be one of the bad buys.

New Line tried to adapt the best-selling videogame Gears of War into movie, but its attempt fell short. With a new producer (Scott Stuber) on board, Gears of War may make it to the big screen yet. Stuber will work on a new script with Epic Games so they'll be on the lookout for a writer.

Sony avoided disaster when Men in Black 3, a movie marred by a troubled production and cost overruns, became a global hit by taking in over $624 million at the box office. All according to plan, of course. With MIB 3 a success, Sony can start on the fourth movie, and the studio has hired Oren Uziel to write the screenplay.

The big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's best-selling novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, is moving forward with Burr Steers attached to direct and Lily Collins in talks for the lead role. Since Lionsgate abandoned (left it for dead, if you will) the adaptation, Megan Ellison's Panorama Media jumped on the opportunity to produce and finance the movie.
