What's Popping: 'ID Forever', 'Gremlins', 'Toxic Avengers', 'Angry Birds', Crouching Tiger 2'

Independence Day

Independence Day 2 & 3, whenever they're coming, will not be the last we'll see of humanity fighting back against invading extraterrestrials by hacking into their computer systems if Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have their way. No, those two sequels, if they are successful, are just the beginning of the duo's plan to create "a series" of films based on this universe.

Instead of making Gremlins 3, Warner Bros has decided to just remake Joe Dante's 1984 original. Seth Grahame-Smith is coming on board to produce along with David Katzenberg, although it's unclear if he'll write the screenplay as well. The first movie made over made over $150 million at the box office, but its sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, made just a little bit over $41 million.

We would never expect Arnold Schwarzenegger to be cast in The Toxic Avenger remake, but, lo and behold, that's what's happened. He'll play a former black ops agent called the Exterminator and will teach the Toxic Avenger how to use his powers for good. Terminator 5 can't happen soon enough.

Sony is betting, or maybe hoping, that the Angry Bird video game is still popular in 2016 because that's when the movie adaptation is coming out. If not, the studio may be facing the wrath of some angry shareholders. Maybe this will end up more like the Resident Evil or Tomb Raider series than Super Mario Bros.

The Weinstein Company has tapped legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo Ping to direct the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel. Titled Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II - The Green Destiny, the movie will see Michelle Yeoh return to reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien and joining her will be Donnie Yen as Silent Wolf. Production is planned for March 2014.
