What's Popping: Disney's New Chief, 'Jupiter Ascending', Khaaan?, 'Treasure Island', 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

Alan Horn

A little more than a month after Rich Ross stepped down as the head of movie division at Disney, the company has finally found his successor in former WB chief Alan Horn. Unlike Ross, Horn is an experienced hand in the industry and, immediately, his effect is being felt. He shifted the release dates for The Lone Ranger and Thor 2 and announced that more movies will be produced each year under his regime.

Lana and Andy Wachowski hit a home run with the Matrix movies, but striked out badly with their followup Speed Racer, so they were "benched" for a number of years. For their next solo effort however, they're returning to the genre that made them famous. According to Vulture's source, Jupiter Ascending is kind of like Snow White in space, and it will take three movies to tell. Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum are attached to star. They co-directed Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer which is coming out on December 6, 2012.

Is Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan in Star Trek 2? There were rumors that say he is, but director JJ Abrams has denied it. Now, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the movie, has said the same. In an interview with The Telegraph, Pegg says, "It's not Khan. That's a myth. Everyone's saying it is, but it's not." Misinformation? Disinformation? The plot thickens!

Warner Bros is doing a new Treasure Island movie and has hired Guy Ritchie to helm the project. His success with the Sherlock Holmes movies has apparently elevated his standing with the studio's brass in that his is trusted with another expensive project. The last time Ritchie went near water was with Swept Away, a forgetable movie that starred his then-wife Madonna.

With about a month to go before G.I. Joe: Retaliation is to be released in theaters, Paramount surveyed the landscape and made the decision to move the movie back to March 29, 2013. That certainly didn't send a good signal about the movie. Supposedly, the delay will allow the studio to convert the movie to 3D and to reshoot some scenes to allow Channing Tatum more screen time.
