Weekend Box Office Report: 'Thor' Continues to Rule On High

This weekend, Thor: The Dark World topped the charts once more; one would expect no different, so this is hardly a surprise. What was a surprise was that it was chased rather closely by this weekend’s new release, The Best Man Holiday.
Thor: The Dark World pulled in another $38.4 million, making its total earnings a colossal $146.9 million so far. It’s quite a dip from last week, but there’s little doubt that the film will break $250 million; but will it break Iron Man 3’s $409 million?
Thor was followed rather closely by The Best Man Holiday, the sole new release of this weekend, which earned $30.5 million—roughly $10 million over its predicted earnings. Perhaps more sequels should wait over a decade to be released, to build up a little more hype.
The third-highest earnings went to Last Vegas, which has gained ascendancy over the non-Thor holdover films at weekend earnings of $8.8 million and a total of $46.9 million. After that came Free Birds with $8.3 million, and total revenues of $42.2 million. Our last honorable mention, charts, fell to fifth-highest earnings this weekend at $7.6 million, with a heftier total of $90.2 million so far.
