Weekend Box Office Report: 'TFiOS' Conquers

The Fault in Our Stars

As much as critics bemoan the continued release of young adult movies, the industry will not slow down for years and years to come, for one simple reason: they make lots of money, provided the cast and crew do a decent job. This weekend illustrated this point nicely, especially since the movie in question was actually very well-received. Critique of the industry notwithstanding, one fact remains—this weekend, the box office belongs to The Fault in Our Stars.

The tear-jerking, laugh-inspiring, all-around feels-fest made itself $48.2 million this weekend, around $10 million more than it was predicted to earn (which has become the theme of the last few weeks, it seems). With all the hype this film was receiving (not to mention its high reviews), however, this was hardly a surprise.

Next came last week’s top earner, Maleficent, which stuck to the upper levels of the charts with earnings of $33.5 million and a colossal total of $127.3 million.

The third-highest earnings went to this weekend’s other new release, Edge of Tomorrow, totaling at $29.1 million. While this film did better with critics than The Fault in Our Stars, there’s no beating a good film based on a beloved novel, no matter what the ratings say.

Finally, our other honorable mentions for this weekend are X-Men: Days of Future Past (with revenues this weekend of $14.7 million, and a total of $189.1 million) and A Million Ways to Die in the West, which made another $7.1 million for a cumulative sum of $30 million so far.
