Weekend Box Office Report: 'Rio 2' Nearly Unseats 'Captain America'

With the titanic numbers that the latest Marvel film has been pulling in for the last week, no one expected any of the new releases to beat it to the top of the box office; so, it was no surprise when this did not happen. What was surprising was how close one of the new releases—which was rated somewhat mediocrely—came to doing so.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues to rule the charts from on high, having made itself $41.3 million this weekend, for a hefty total of $159 million. While it’s a significant drop from last weekend, the film definitely isn’t hurting for money.
Its big contender was Rio 2, which for all the bland reviews it received, still managed to exceed its generous projected earnings with a gross of $39 million. It was followed distantly by its fellow new releases, Oculus and Draft Day, which respectively earned $12 million and $9.7 million.
Our honorable mention of the week is the tenacious young adult holdover, Divergent, which made another $7.5 million for a total of $124.8 million.
