Weekend Box Office Report: 'Ride Along' Tops Charts…Somehow

On Friday, it looked like it was going to be a normal weekend—several unremarkably-rated releases entered theaters, with equally unremarkable projected earnings for the weekend; odds were that Lone Survivor would take the highest earnings, and the other releases would populate the higher regions of the charts. This was not the case, as the most unassuming release, Ride Along, took in the highest earnings.
The comedy combo of Kevin Hart and Ice Cube earned $41.2 million this weekend—a good $10-$15 million over its predicted gross for its opening weekend. Whatever the cast and crew did, they did it right.
Lone Survivor was pushed a spot down to the second-highest earnings slot, making $23.2 million this weekend for a sum of $74 million so far. After that came the next new release, The Nut Job, which also made a little more than expected at $20.5 million.
Next, we have the only release that seemed like it was rated well enough to make it to this level of the charts, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, which earned a bit under its projected gross at $17 million. And it just wouldn’t seem right if Frozen weren’t in the top five earners with revenues of $11.9 million and overall earnings of $332.6 million.
Finally, our last new release, Devil’s Due , had the misfortune of earning just under their predicted range at only $8.5 million.
