Weekend Box Office Report: 'Paranormal Activity' Tops 'The Hobbit,' 'Frozen' Beats Them Both

Frozen

This weekend was a mixed bag for the solitary new release, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones—while it did manage the laudable feat of pulling in higher earnings than The Desolation of Smaug, both films were topped by a holdout of nearly two months—Disney’s Frozen.

The frosty animated film, which had climbed to the second-highest spot on the charts last weekend, ascended yet another spot with top earnings of $20.7 million, and a staggering total of $298.7 million.

This weekend’s new release, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, came in second with revenues of $18.2 million; while this is right in the projected range (which was generous for a film that was so poorly received), it wasn’t quite enough to give it top earnings for the weekend.

It was enough, however, to dethrone The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which suffered a severe dip from last weekend’s gross at only $16.2 million; however, with total earnings of $229.6 million so far, it isn’t hurting too badly.

After that came last weekend’s The Wolf of Wall Street, which brought in $13.4 million this weekend for a total of $63.2 million, and American Hustle, which earned another $13.2 million for a total of $88.7 million.
