Weekend Box Office Report: No Unknowns, No Surprises—‘Riddick’ Tops Charts

Given that Riddick was the sole film to open in theaters this weekend, and had little competition from releases of previous weeks, it’s no shock that Vin Diesel and David Twohy’s latest collaboration was able to handily pull in the largest gross over the weekend.
Riddick was able to earn $18.6 million at the box office over the weekend; this is right in the neighborhood of its projected earnings, so once again, it’s no surprise.
Among the holdouts, Lee Daniels' The Butler continues to hold supremacy, earning another $8.9 million for a total of $91.9 million. The mantle of third-highest earnings went to the indie film Instructions Not Included, which made $8.1 million, totaling at $21.1 million.
The other tenacious holdouts are all the usual suspects: We’re The Millers fell to the fourth-highest slot, adding $7.9 million to its earnings for a total of $123.8 million, and Planes earned $4.2 million, for a sum of $79.2 million.
