Weekend Box Office Report: New Releases Keep a Low Profile

Playing for Keeps

The past week’s most prominent release, Playing for Keeps, managed to gross $6 million this weekend; which, given that its reception from critics was about as bad as it can be (a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is up from an abysmal 0% rating on Friday), is not too bad.

Another of last week’s releases, Hyde Park on Hudson, earned $83,300 in its opening weekend—given that it only debuted in four theaters nationwide (and that it was demoted to a 40% rating on the Tomatometer), this is hardly surprising.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is finally coming down off of its last-movie-of-the-franchise box office hysteria, relaxing into the 3rd-highest earnings over the weekend at $9.2 million. Skyfall brought in the highest earnings this weekend--$11 million—followed by Rise of the Guardians at $10.5 million.
