Weekend Box Office Report: New Releases ‘Identity Theft’ and ‘Side Effects’ Blow Out Box Office

Identity Theft

Despite the disparity between their critical receptions, both of last week’s releases managed to make a respectable showing for themselves at the box office this weekend.

Identity Thief, fighting against a less-than-flattering value on the old Tomatometer, made almost $36.6 million over the weekend, the highest earnings this weekend. These earnings are above even the high predicted range of $17-$21.1 million. Road trip-comedies are still alive and well, it seems.

The second-highest weekend gross went to Warm Bodies, whose peculiar zombie romance managed to charm another $11.5 million’s worth of audiences, for a total of $36.6 million. Last week’s other new release, Side Effects, made $10 million, which was, unfortunately, below its predicted opening-weekend earnings range. Identity Thief: 1, Side Effects: 0.

Among the holdouts clinging to the higher spots on the charts, Silver Linings Playbook continues its many-month reign of terror, making $6.9 million this weekend for a total of $90 million. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters also continues to make a respectable showing (given that critics generally had nothing good to say about it), earning $5.7 million for a sum of $43.8 million (numbers from Box Office Mojo.
