Weekend Box Office Report: New Releases ‘Gangster Squad,’ ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ and ‘A Haunted House’ Top Charts

This weekend, all three new releases managed to top the box office charts in earnings—in some cases, despite some withering reviews and critical reception.
Zero Dark Thirty claimed the top spot this weekend; the film earned $24 million for a total of almost $29.5 million (due to the film coming out in limited release four weeks previously) which isn’t surprising—despite its potentially controversial nature, it was given an impressive rating of 93% by Rotten Tomatoes.
What was surprising was the weekend revenues pulled in by A Haunted House, which earned $18.8 million—much greater than its projected earnings (HSX gave it a range of $12.5-$14 million), and in spite of a 9% on the Tomatometer (which at least is an improvement from the 0% it had on Friday).
This week’s third and final release, Gangster Squad, earned $16.7 million over the weekend. Coming in behind the new releases are holdouts Django Unchained, earning over $11 million for a total of almost $125.4 million, and Les MisérablesBox Office Mojo).
