Weekend Box Office Report: 'Neighbors' Trashes Everyone on the Charts

Neighbors

One of this weekend’s new releases pulled a fast one on the box office, making well above its predicted earnings and dominating the charts over every other release, both new and old. It was no contest—this weekend belonged to Neighbors.

The Rogen-Efron comedy collaboration pulled in impressive earnings of $51 million—nearly $20 million more than it was projected to make. Still, given that it had very little in the way of competition, both from newer and older releases, perhaps this isn’t terribly surprising.

Last week’s champion, The Amazing Spiderman 2, earned itself a more modest gross of $37.2 million, adding to its not-so-modest total of $147.9 million. While this sequel still won’t cut it for many critics and die-hard fans, it seems like it will at least be more successful than the first installment of the rebooted series.

Next came The Other Woman, which is clinging admirably to the higher levels of the charts with earnings of $9.2 million this weekend, and $61.7 million overall. It was followed again by Heaven is For Real, which made itself another $7 million for a total of $75.2 million. Captain America: The Winter Soldier came next, again following last weekend’s trend with revenues of $5.6 million over the weekend and a cumulative total of almost $245 million.

Our other new release, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, narrowly fulfilled its already-low expectations with earnings of only $3.7 million. Will we ever see another worthy installment in the saga of Oz, or are we doomed to lazy spinoffs, prequels and sequels? Only time will tell.
