Weekend Box Office Report: 'Mama' Tops Charts, Releases 'Broken City' and 'The Last Stand' Fall Behind Holdouts

This weekend proved very lucrative for one of last week’s releases, but a little disappointing for the other two films, sad to say.
Mama came out on top this weekend, earning over $28.1 million (a considerable amount greater than its projected range of $18.5-$20 million), spiting many critics that claimed the film was underdeveloped in terms of scripting.
Last week’s other new releases didn’t do quite as spectacularly as Mama. Several holdouts from weeks past cling to the higher spots in the charts: Zero Dark Thirty was pushed to second-highest revenues, making $17.6 million for a total of $55.9 million.
Bringing in the third-highest weekend profits was an older holdout, Silver Linings Playbook, which earned over $11.5 million, adding up to a total of $55.3 million. The sudden resurgence in profits is certainly sudden, though perhaps not surprising, given its reception and publicity at the Golden Globes.
The fourth-highest gross went to Gangster Squad at $9.1 million (for a sum of $32.2 million), and at fifth-highest was another of this last week’s new releases, Broken City, which earned $9 million.
The third and final release from last week, The Last Stand, came in at 10th on the charts, making $6.3 million (numbers from Box Office Mojo).
