Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Lego Movie' Blows the Roof Off the Box Office

The Lego Movie

The title is no exaggeration—after weeks of relatively small grosses pulled in by modest releases, The Lego Movie earned an unprecedented amount of money over the weekend, larger even than its hefty projected earnings. Hopefully, this will kick off a trend of more lively releases bringing more viewers to the box office.

The Lego Movie made itself a tidy pile of opening-weekend earnings, currently sitting at $69.1 million. Whether it’s the traditional building sets or the big screen, there is no beating Lego, it seems. It was followed by the somewhat fortunate The Monuments Men—while it earned only a third of its fellow new release’s revenues ($22.7 million), it still earned above its predicted gross.

After these two, it’s a whole lot of holdover films. Ride Along remains at the top of the older releases, having earned $9.3 million this weekend, with a total of $105.1 million. It was once again followed by Frozen, which continued to chug along in the box office with revenues $6.9 million this time around, and its ever-growing total of $368.6 million.

The last of the honorable-mention holdover films is last week’s That Awkward Moment, which again chased Frozen, this time with weekend earnings of $5.5 million, and a modest total of $16.8 million.

Our final new release, Vampire Academy, sits a few spots further down on the charts, having earned only half of its predicted gross at $4.1 million.
