Weekend Box Office Report: Holdover Films: 1, New Releases: 0

Last week’s new releases were met with a mixed bag of weekend numbers—the standout releases, Killing Them Softly and The Collection, made opening-weekend profits that were lower and higher than their estimates, respectively.

Killing Them Softly grossed $7 million over the weekend—which, given its good reception by critics (Rotten Tomatoes gave it a very respectable 81%) and an estimate of between $9.5 million and $10.8 million in earnings for its opening weekend, was disappointing for a film lauded for being more than your average shoot-em-up action film.

The Collection, however, earned $3.4 million this weekend, despite its relatively small amount of advertising, a predicted weekend gross of $2.5-$3 million, and a less-than-ideal rating from critics (a 46% on the Tomatometer)—certainly a surprising result for a sequel to an indie horror film, that opened in around 1400 theaters in the country.

The films from the last few weeks, unsurprisingly, remain firmly in place at the top of the box office charts. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 pulled in the highest earnings, $17.4 million. Like last week, Skyfall and Lincoln come in at 2nd- and 3rd-highest, with $17 million and $13.5 million, respectively.
