Weekend Box Office Report: The Hobbit’s More-or-Less Impressive Debut

The Hobbit

The big release for this weekend—The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey—made an impressive debut this weekend; although, its initial numbers pale in comparison to some of the other highly-anticipated releases of 2012.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned over $84 million at the box office on its opening weekend; this is certainly an impressive start for the long-awaited release, but it also falls short of not only the projections for this weekend (from $94-$108 million, according to HSX), but some of the explosive opening weekend profits of some of the other more popular releases of the year, including The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (which earned $141 million in its opening weekend) and
Skyfall (which earned over $88.3 million).

Coming in behind The Hobbit is
Rise of the Guardians, which earned $7.4 million this weekend for a total of over $71.3 million thus far, and Lincoln, grossing $7.2 million for a total of almost $107.9 million (numbers from Box Office Mojo).
