Weekend Box Office Report: The 'Guardians' Are On Fire

With the insane, many-month long anticipation of Marvel’s latest film in the Avengers-driven story arc, it is no surprise whatsoever that Guardians of the Galaxy had no trouble whatsoever bringing in incredible earnings, and subsequently conquering the box office. This is as straightforward as weekend charts ever get, so let’s get to it.
The Guardians pulled in a hefty $94 million over the weekend—a good $20 million over its predicted gross (although, it’s difficult to overestimate the revenues that Marvel’s films will bring in, so that’s not terribly surprising). After months of teaser trailers and tantalizing updates, it must be a relief for moviegoers and the filmmakers alike that this film was able to deliver.
Last week’s Lucy was bumped down a spot from last week, making $18.2 million this weekend for a total of $79.5 million (there is no shame in this, given the tremendous viewership that Guardians sucked up). It was followed by our other new release, Get On Up, which made a modest $14 million in opening-weekend revenues.
Our final honorable mentions for holdover films are last week’s Hercules, which made another $10.7 million for a total of $52.3 million so far, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which earned $8.7 million this weekend and $189.3 million overall.
