Weekend Box Office Report: 'Gravity' and 'Captain Phillips' Dominate

As expected, the two über-highly rated films of the last two weeks took the lion’s share of earnings in the box office over the weekend, and now stand proudly at the top of the charts this weekend. Accordingly, this week’s less well-received release, and the remaining holdover films, did much less well.
Gravity once again brought in the highest earnings by far, making another $44.2 million (incidentally, its second weekend gross is also bigger than its predicted opening weekend gross) for a whopping total of $123.4 million in only two weeks.
The returning champion release was followed by Captain Phillips, which made a less explosive debut this weekend with earnings of $26 million—it should be noted that, while not as dramatic as the hurricane of revenues currently being generated by Gravity, this sum is still quite a bit more than it was expected to make (plus, Gravity is a bit of hard act to follow).
After that came Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which continued to hold on to the higher spots on the charts with revenues of $14.2 million, and total earnings of $78 million. Following it was this weekend’s other, less impressive new release, Machete Kills, which earned just under $3.8 million, a bit under half of its predicted gross. It was at least able to earn above Runner Runner, the less-hyped release of last week, which earned $3.7 million for a sum of $14.1 million.
