Weekend Box Office Report: 'Godzilla' Tramples its Way to the Top

It seems the world was definitely ready for a Godzilla reboot, as the monster’s presence in the box office was nearly as big as that on-screen. All half-clever word play aside, its revenues were enormous: there was very little contest as to which release, new or old, would take the lion’s share of box office earnings.
Godzilla earned almost $30 million above its predicted gross at $93.2 million over the weekend. Whatever criticisms were levelled at the film, moviegoers clearly were not bothered by them, as the hordes of viewers have made Godzilla an instant hit.
It was followed by last week’s Neighbors, which made itself a more modest gross of $25.9 million, with a respectable total of $91.5 million. It was followed once again by The Amazing Spiderman 2, which halved its earnings from last weekend at $16.8 million, with a total of $172.1 million.
Our less octane-pumped new release, Million Dollar Arm, came next, making a bit below its projected range at only $10.5 million. It at least sits a slot above The Other Woman, which earned $6.3 million for a sum of $71.6 million.
