Weekend Box Office Report: The Final Weekend of 2012

Django Unchained

In this last weekend of the year, the last week’s releases had a far better time in the box office than many of the new releases of the last few months; 2012’s Christmas releases especially made an impressive debut in the box office this last weekend.

Unsurprisingly, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey remains at the top of the charts, earning almost $33 million this weekend for a whopping total of $222.7 million; it’s fair to say that, with this kind of weekend gross, The Hobbit is here to stay in theaters for quite a while more.

After The Hobbit, new releases dominate the box office—Django Unchained earned over $30.6 million, making it one of the few films in the last few months to not only meet, but exceed its projected opening weekend gross (which was $27 million, according to Box Office Guru); Django has earned a total of over $64 million thus far. Conversely, Les Misérables earned just under its predicted $30 million, receiving a still-impressive $28 million for a total of $67.4 million.

Following these impressive box office debuts are Parental Guidance, a release from last week that grossed $14.8 million, as well as releases from the week before: Jack Reacher added $14 million to a total of over $44.6 billion, and This is 40 brought in almost $13.2 million for a sum of $37.1 million (numbers from numbers from Box Office Mojo).
