Weekend Box Office Report: 'Die Hard 5' Tops New Releases 'Safe Haven,' 'Escape From Planet Earth,' 'Beautiful Creatures'

A Good Day to Die Hard

Despite the paltry reviews most of this last week’s releases received, they all made a somewhat respectable showing for themselves at the box office.

First and foremost among the new releases is A Good Day to Die Hard, which grossed $25 million over the weekend, for a total of $33.2 million (as the film first opened in theaters on Valentine’s Day). As tired as the franchise is, it clearly has enough appeal to muster enough fans to make decent numbers on its opening weekend.

A holdout from last week separated the procession of new releases in the box office charts; Identity Thief grossed another $23.4 million, for a total of $70.7 million so far.

The next-highest gross of the new releases—$21.4 million—was earned by Safe Haven; because this film also opened on Valentine’s Day, the film’s total currently rests at over $30.2 million.

Oddly enough, the releases with the highest initial ratings did the poorest of the new releases—make of that what you will. Escape from Planet Earth pulled in the fourth-highest gross, which totaled at a little over $16 million.

Another continuing holdout clung to the upper echelons of the charts, above the last of this last week’s new releases—Warm Bodies earned another $9 million to add to its sum of $50 million over the last two weeks.

Finally, Beautiful Creatures came in at 6th-highest earnings this weekend, making $7.4 million for a total of $10 million. This particular bid for the young adult audience craving a new supernatural romance didn’t fare as well as its creators had hoped, unfortunately.
