Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Conjuring' Summons Big Money

The Conjuring

Most of this weekend’s films made a fair showing of themselves—some certainly more than others—but there was one new release that truly outdid itself, and soared to the top of the charts: The Conjuring.

This terrifying release, which stood well above its fellow releases in ratings, earned $41.5 million over the weekend, almost $20 million over its predicted opening weekend gross (and those of the other new releases). It was chased by the ever-popular holdover film Despicable Me 2, which earned another $25 million for a huge sum of $276.1 million (surpassing its predecessor, the first Despicable Me).

Another of DreamWorks’ creations, last Wednesday’s Turbo, did fairly well, earning $21.5 million for a total of $31.2 million. While a bit short of its projected revenues, it’s certainly not a terrible showing, especially given the ill fortune of the other new releases.

Another holdover divided the pack of new releases: Grown Ups 2, despite ratings even worse than the lowest received by this weekend’s batch, managed to make another $20 million, for a total of $79.5 million. After that came Red 2, which earned $18.5 million. This weekend’s last release, R.I.P.D., earned only $12.7 million.
