Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Although the film didn’t quite reach the astronomical height of earnings it was predicted to attain, there was little question that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 would sit comfortably at the top of the charts. The results for the rest of this weekend’s releases were a little more interesting, however.

Cloudy 2 made $35 million on its opening weekend; it’s not the $44 million that was predicted for the film, but it’s more than the $30 million that the first Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is certainly nothing to turn one’s proverbial nose up at.

The second-highest earnings went to last weekend’s Prisoners, which earned another $11.2 million for a total of $38.9 million. After that came the rest of this weekend’s new releases, chief among them Rush, which earned $10.3 million over the weekend; and since it opened in limited release last weekend, its total sits at $10.5 million.

Sadly, Rush was followed not by Don Jon, but Baggage Claim, last week’s more traditional (or formulaic, depending on your outlook) romantic comedy, which earned $9.3 million. Don Jon earned just below it, at $9 million.
