Weekend Box Office Report: 'Catching Fire' Overshadows 'The Dark World'

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

This weekend, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made an explosive (ha) debut in theaters, pulling in massive earnings and marginalizing just about everything else currently in theaters.

The initially far-fetched prediction of $180 million on Catching Fire’s opening weekend was not too far off of the mark, as it managed to earn a whopping $161.1 million. This windfall continues the streak of huge earnings established by The Hunger Games last year, which earned $152.5 million on its opening weekend.

This weekend ended the reign of terror over the charts of Thor: The Dark World, which earned only $14.1 million this weekend, with a total of $167.8 million so far; now that it’s actively competing for revenues, it may have trouble matching the colossal sums pulled in by the other Marvel films. Thor was once again followed by The Best Man Holiday, which earned another $12.5 million for a sum of $50.3 million.

After that came this weekend’s other new release, Delivery Man, which earned a modest $8.2 million. It was followed by the equally modest but admirably persistent Free Birds, which made another $5.3 million for a total of $48.5 million.
