Weekend Box Office Report: 'Captain America' Tops Charts Once More

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel’s releases always have impressive box office longevity, and their latest film is no exception. Despite a hoard of new releases flooding the box office vying for a decent weekend gross, the latest Marvel film remains at the top (although, it probably owes a little to the fact that three of the four new releases failed to get a positive consensus from critics).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier kept its perch atop the charts, making another $26.6 million for an ever –growing total of $201.5 million. Provided no amazing new movies open in theaters over the next few weeks, Captain America is here to stay.

It was once again followed by Rio 2, which continues to do better than its ratings would suggest at $22.5 million this weekend, and $75.3 million total. If nothing else, Rio 2 chose a great time to come out, since the animated film audience has been ravenous for new films since Frozen stopped showing.

Next came the first of our new releases, the also appropriately-timed Heaven is For Real. The balance of attempted depth and popular appeal put this film above the other new releases, making $21.5 million over the weekend and $28.5 million since its release on Wednesday. It was followed by Transcendence and A Haunted House 2, which respectively earned $11.1 million $9.1 million.

Finally, the last new release, Disneynature’s Bears, sat a few slots lower than its companion releases, having earned $4.7 million.
