Weekend Box Office Report: 'Captain America' Owns the Box Office

There’s no other way to put it—this weekend was an absolute blowout for Marvel’s latest film in the Avengers cycle. Some of this success could be attributed to the absolute lack of blockbusters on par with it over the last few months, but with box office numbers this good, you have to be doing something right.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier pulled in an incredible $96.2 million over the weekend, fulfilling and exceeding its already-lofty predicted earnings. Given that each new release seems to not only continue the trend of high earnings, but increase it with each new film, we can keep expecting Marvel films for a good, long time.
Last week’s Noah was a distant second this weekend (through no fault of its own, really—I mean, it had to contend with a Captain America movie), making another $17 million for a sizeable total of $72.3 million. It was again followed by Divergent, whose brief heyday is being mourned with modest revenues of $13 million. However, with total earnings of $114 million so far, the film isn’t exactly hurting for money.
Rounding off the honorable mentions are two indie(ish) films enjoying an impressive amount of attention—and viewership—for the amount of theaters showing their films. God’s Not Dead made itself another $7.7 million for a total of $32.5 million, and The Grand Budapest Hotel earned $6.3 million for a sum of $33.3 million so far.
