Weekend Box Office Report: 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Continues to Dominate

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II

Despite a plethora of new releases earlier this week, the majority of box office profits continued to go to some of the more high-profile films currently in theaters -- namely, the last film in the Twilight series.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 continues to earn top box office earnings at over $43 million this weekend alone, totaling almost $227 million so far. This is already higher than the total gross for the first film -- $192.7 million -- but has a ways to go before it approaches the epic earnings of the other Twilight films, which average at $292.8 million.

Many “Twi”-hard fans of the franchise say that the last installment in the saga is the best (despite some decidedly mixed opinions of the film from critics); only time will tell if the box office earnings will support the claim.

Skyfall and Lincoln pulled in the 2nd- and 3rd-highest earnings this weekend, respectively; Skyfall earned $36 million (making an impressive total of $200 million for the film thus far), while Lincoln earned $25 million.

This week's new releases ranged from 4th-highest weekend earnings to much lower; which, given they had to compete with the final part of the Twilight franchise and what some are saying is the best Bond film of all time, isn't necessarily surprising.

Rise of the Guardians came in just under Lincoln at $24 million, which, while a lot less than the predicted opening weekend earnings of $58 million, is certainly a respectable start, given that last year's holiday films such as Arthur Christmas earned between $10 and $20 million on opening weekend.

Life of Pi brought in $22 million, falling short of the high forecasted weekend earnings ($25-$28 million).

Critics were sadly correct, however, about the low expectations for Red Dawn, whose weekend earnings of $14.6 million fell comfortably in the forecasted range of $13 million to $16.6 million. Despite a cast including Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, and Josh Hutcherson, the reboot didn't have the context and cult-classic allure of the original.
