Weekend Box Office Report: 'Battle of the Year' Loses the Battle of the Box Office, 'Prisoners' Captures Top Earnings

Despite its star-studded cast, it’s difficult to imagine that the dance film Battle of the Year would do much more than meet its rather small projected gross for the weekend. It was not even able to do that, however, and its counterpart in the new releases this weekend was the only one to pull its predicted earnings.
Prisoners currently sits at the top of the charts, having earned $21.4 million over the weekend. This makes the predicted earnings pretty much right on the money (ha ha), so there are no surprises here.
The rest of the charts came together fairly predictably, as well. Insidious Chapter 2 lost its top spot, but did pull in the highest earnings of the holdover films, making another $14.5 million for a total of $60.8 million. It was again followed by The Family, which adding $7 million to the pile (which sits at $25.6 million, currently). That was in turn followed by the triumphant indie film, Instructions Not Included, which earned another $5.7 million for a sum of $34.2 million.
After these three holdouts came the other new release this weekend, Battle of the Year, which made only $5 million. It at least managed to earn above the persistent We’re The Millers and Lee Daniels' The Butler, which both made a little over $4 million apiece for respective totals of $138.1 million and $106.4 million. However, given that these films have been in theaters for nearly two months, that isn’t much of an accomplishment.
