Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Transformers’ Takes the Weekend By Storm

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Critics can lament the utter lack of quality in this film (and any other, for that matter) all that they want, but if anything can be learned from how this weekend’s charts played out, it’s this: a lack of quality can be utterly negated by enough hype and notoriety in this film industry.

Transformers: Age of Extinction hammered this point out as violently as possible this weekend, fulfilling its high expectations in spite of the scathing reviews it garnered with earnings of $100 million.

The second-highest earnings, totaling at $15.4 million, once again went to 22 Jump Street, though they took a severe drop from last week (owing most likely to the massive amount of viewership that Transformers sucked up). However, with earnings of $139.8 million so far, the filmmakers probably aren’t complaining.

It was followed once again by How to Train Your Dragon 2, which made another $13.1 million for a total of $128.1 million so far.

Next came last week’s Think Like a Man Too, knocked down a few spots by the newer or more popular releases to earnings of only $10.4 million, with a sum of $48.1 million. It was followed by the ever-persistent Maleficent, which continues to cling to the higher levels of the charts with revenues of $8.2 million this weekend, and a colossal total of $201.8 million.
