Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Transformers’ Holds the Fort

Transformers: Age of Extinction

With the explosive debut this film made in the box office last weekend, and considering the lackluster round of new releases that entered theaters this weekend, it comes as little surprise that Transformers: Age of Extinction, as poorly rated as it was, was able to keep its spot at the top of the charts easily.

The action-packed robot extravaganza earned itself another $36.4 million this weekend, for a huge two-week total of $174.7 million. Unless some massive new releases hit the box office in the coming weeks (just wait for next weekend, folks), Transformers is here to stay.

Next came the most fortunate of this weekend’s new releases, Tammy. Melissa McCarthy’s comedy fame was enough to garner decent viewership for the film, as it was able to make a modest $21.1 million over the weekend, with a five-day total of $32.9 million. The same cannot be said for one of its fellow releases, Deliver Us from Evil, which followed at a significant distance with weekend revenues of $9.5 million, and a total of $15 million.

The two new releases were followed by a couple holdover films, the first of which being the persistent 22 Jump Street, which made $9.4 million this weekend, raising its total gross to $158.8 million. It was again followed by How to Train Your Dragon 2, with weekend revenues of $8.7 million and a total of $140 million.

Finally, our last new release, Earth to Echo, didn’t make a huge name for itself in the box office with a weekend gross of only $8.2 million, and a five-day total of $13.5 million.
