Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Fast & Furious 6’ Speeds to the Top

Fast & Furious 6

In the midst of all these super-hyped summer films, one might expect that a few more or less normal releases would be white noise—this was not so, as most of last week’s new releases managed to top the charts.

Fast & Furious 6 sits at the tops of the charts, with opening-weekend earnings of $98.5 million. While not quite within the range predicted for its opening weekend, Fast & Furious 6 still made very respectable earnings for an action franchise that’s put out six films’ worth of explosions and car chases (and has another three planned—we can expect Fast & Furious 7 in the near future, with eighth and ninth installments rumored to follow). Right behind Fast & Furious 6 is one of this last week’s other new releases, The Hangover Part III, which made $42.4 million—yes, it’s roughly $20 million below its predicted gross, but for a comedy sequel that critics say wasn’t all that comical, it’s a respectable number.

The third-highest earnings went to holdover film Star Trek Into Darkness, which made $38 million for a stellar total of $146.8 million. After that came the last of last week’s new releases, Epic, which earned $34.2 million. Finally, Iron Man 3 continues to cling to the higher levels of the box office charts, earning another $19.4 million for a total of $367.5 million (numbers from the weekend charts at Box Office Mojo).
