Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Tops Charts

There were absolutely no surprises in the way this weekend’s charts played out. The only new release this weekend was the first quality release in several weeks, and it is one of the bigger titles dropping this summer—there was really no contest. This weekend belongs to Dawn of the Planet .
The sci-fi prequel/sequel (depending on which Planet of the Apes movie you’re talking about) made itself a hefty $73 million over the weekend. This is even more than it was predicted to make initially, and probably a result of moviegoers looking for a more substantial film than what the past couple weekends had to offer.
The rest of the charts played out almost exactly like last weekend’s charts. Transformers: Age of Extinction made another $16.5 million for an ever-rising total of $209 million; it was followed again by Tammy, which earned $12.9 million over the weekend, and $57.3 million overall.
Tammy was again followed by 22 Jump Street with weekend revenues of $6.7 million and a sum of $171.9 million. How to Train Your Dragon 2 kept the fifth-highest earnings spot with a gross of $5.8 million this weekend, and $152 million.
