Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Anchorman 2’ Comes in Second

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Despite a horde of new releases vying to dethrone The Hobbit, everyone’s favorite burglar and band of dwarves remained strong, and retained the treasured spot atop the box office charts.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug earned another $31.4 million, with an impressive two-week total of $127.5 million. It was chased rather closely by Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the most successful of this weekend’s releases, with an opening weekend gross of $26.7 million, and a total of $40 million, having opened on Wednesday.

The third-highest earnings went to Frozen, which was once more knocked down a spot on the charts having made only $19.1 million; still, the film has a total of $191.5 million so far, so it’s still doing rather well.

After that came two of this weekend’s new(ish) releases, which had previously been in limited release—American Hustle, also with revenues of $19.1 million, but with a total of $20.2 million, and Saving Mr. Banks, which made $9.3 million over the weekend and $9.9 million overall.

The underdog of the new releases, Walking with Dinosaurs, sat a bit further down on the charts, with earnings of only $7.3 million.
