Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Purge’ Cleans House

Both of last week’s releases did rather well, bringing on revenues above their forecasted earnings; however, one of last week’s releases truly outdid itself, and brought in quite a bit more than expected.
The Purge currently sits at the top of the weekend charts, having earned an impressive $36.3 million—almost $20 million more than its predicted earnings. Apparently, the general public found its mix of suspense and cultural commentary more interesting than critics did.
The Purge was followed by holdouts from weeks past: Fast & Furious 6 occupies the second-highest slot, with revenues of $19.7 for this weekend, and an impressive total of $202.9 million so far. After that comes Now You See Me, which made another $19.5 million for a cumulative sum of $61.3 million.
The fourth-highest earnings went to this weekend’s other new release, The Internship, which earned $18.1 million. While not as dramatic as The Purge’s earnings, it did make a little over its projected weekend gross. Finally, continuing holdover Epic managed to stay near the top of the charts, earning another $12.1 million for a sum of $84.1 million so far.
