Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Lego Movie’ Stays on Top

Even with four new releases crowding their way into theaters over the weekend, The Lego Movie had very little trouble keeping its spot on top of the box office charts. However, given that most of the new releases were buried in negative reviews, perhaps this isn’t the most surprising development ever.
The Lego Movie earned itself another tidy sum over the weekend, making $48.8 million and elevating its total earnings to $129.1 million. With second-weekend earnings that are effortlessly crushing those of several new releases, it’s fair to say that The Lego Movie may stay on top at least one more weekend, maybe two.
It was followed rather distantly by the first of our new releases, About Last Night, the only new release certified “fresh” by the good folks of Rotten Tomatoes. It earned $27 million, placing it squarely within its projected range—between this film and Ride Along, it’s been a good couple months for Kevin Hart.
Next we have Robocop, which also made enough to justify its predicted gross at $21.5 million, with a total of $26.4 million, having opened in theaters earlier in the week. Another earnings gap separated it from our next big earner, The Monuments Men, which made another $15 million for a modest total of $43.6 million.
Endless Love came after The Monuments Men, following the trend of new releases earning grosses very close to their projected revenues by making $13.3 million over the weekend. Our last new release, Winter’s Tale, breaks the pattern, earning only $7.7 million.
