Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Croods’ and ‘Olympus’ Lead New Releases

This weekend’s box office numbers played out pretty predictably, according to the ratings and predicted grosses of the films—this proved to be great news for some of last week’s releases, and not-so-great news for others.
The Croods topped the charts this weekend, earning a hefty sum of $44.7 million; when it comes down to what kind of movie earns the most in the box office, it seems that you can’t beat a decent family film.
Coming in behind The Croods is Olympus Has Fallen, which, for your garden-variety patriotic action film, did quite impressively at $30.5 million—a full $7 million higher than its predicted range.
Holdouts Oz: The Great and Powerful and The Call were pushed down from there top spots last week by the new releases; this weekend, Oz earned another $22 million for a massive total of $177.5 million, while The Call made another $8.7 million for a total of $30.9 million.
The other releases, unfortunately, fell behind these holdouts. Admission made just under its predicted numbers, earning $6.4 million. Spring Breakers, despite having been rated best among last week’s new films, earned only $5 million; however, since it was previously in theaters as a limited release, this is forgivable. The film currently has a total of $5.4 million in total earnings (numbers from Box Office Mojo).
