Weekend Box Office Report: ’42’ Is Number 1

Both of last week’s new releases did very well in the box office this weekend—even despite the arguably vast disparity in quality between the two releases.
Making the top of the charts is 42, which outdid its modest expectations (even for a heartwarming based-on-a-true-story yarn), earning revenues in the ballpark (ha) of $27.2 million on its opening weekend.
Earning over $10 million dollars less than this weekend’s premier release was last week’s other new release of less-convincing quality, Scary Movie 5; its precise revenues totaled up to a bit of $15.1 million.
Coming in behind the new releases is the long-enduring, family-film holdout, The Croods, which grossed another weekend’s worth of respectable earnings, adding $13.2 million for a staggering total of $142.5 million.
Other honorable mentions among releases of the past few weeks are G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Evil Dead, which earned respectively $10.8 million and $9.5 million for respective totals of $102.4 million and $41.5 million (all numbers from Box Office Mojo).
