Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Monsters’ and ‘World War Z’ Scare Up Big Money

This weekend proved very lucrative for this latest batch of new releases—both films outdid their expected range of opening weekend revenues, and in a big way.
This week’s star, Monsters University, earned an impressive $82 million over the weekend—almost $10 million more than the prediction from Box Office Guru. Similarly, this week’s grittier release, World War Z, pulled in $66 million, which is also quite a bit above its expected range.
Our honorable mentions for this weekend made a respectable showing, as well—Man of Steel earned another $41.2 million, for a super sum of $210 million. Remarkably, last week’s comedy, This Is the End, clung to the top five in earnings, making $13 million for a total of almost $57.8 million. Finally, the magical thriller Now You See Me hasn’t pilled its vanishing act just yet, receiving the fifth-highest earnings—$7.8 million—for a tidy sum of $94.4 million (numbers from Box Office Mojo).
