Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Lucy’ Conquers

Since the theaters have been going through a dry spell of sorts for quality films, the first batch of certified fresh releases were able to make a good showing of themselves—one in particular was able to make a good deal above its predicted gross, and easily make its way to the top of the charts. That film was Lucy.
Luc Besson’s sci-fi action thriller made itself a hefty $44 million over the weekend, a good 33% over what it was predicted to make. It seems the acting talent of Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman (among others) was able to not only save the film from its somewhat questionable concept, but propel it to success.
Next came our other freshly-rated release, Hercules, with $29 million in weekend revenues. This film also earned a goodly amount above its projected gross, but it didn’t have quite enough appeal to take down Lucy.
Next came the former reigning champion of the box office, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, making another $16.4 million for a whopping total of $172 million. It was followed by The Purge: Anarchy and Planes: Fire and Rescue, which respectively earned $9.3 million and $5.9 million for respective totals of $51.2 million and $35.1 million.
Finally, our final new release, And So It Goes, didn’t do quite so well as its fellow films, earning only $4.5 million this weekend.
