Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Fast 6’ Tops New Releases ‘After Earth,’ ‘Now You See Me’

Though neither of last week’s releases exactly caught the eyes of film critics, one would think that a couple good CGI romps would be able to make it to the top of the charts, especially given that last week’s releases weren’t necessarily hyped up summer super-films. This was not the case, however, as a holdover from last week continued to make top earnings over the weekend.
Last week’s Fast & Furious 6 remained at the top of the weekend charts, making another $34.5 million for a total of $170.3 million so far. Our new releases, Now You See Me and After Earth, earned the second- and third-highest revenues, respectively earning $28 million and $27 million. While a bit disappointing for After Earth, which could’ve expected almost $10 million more over the weekend, Now You See Me managed to earn around $4 million over its projected earnings range, which is about the best that these films can ask for, given that critics weren’t pleased with either of them.
A couple other honorable mentions for this weekend are Star Trek Into Darkness and Epic, which both earned $16.4 million; Star Trek’s total earnings number at $181.1 million, while Epic has earned $65.1 million so far (numbers, as always, from the weekend charts at Box Office Mojo).
